Grant Schemes

Supporting Independent Living should be one of the key priorities of any Governments Housing Strategy for Older People and People with a disability. Over the years there have been a series of grant available. The grants available can cover from 30% to 95% of the cost of the works depending on income. As with all grants schemes, various terms and conditions apply. The funding for these schemes may be restricted and curtailed from time to time. The grants available generally come under the following headings;

Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability Scheme

The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability is available to assist in the carrying out of works which are reasonably necessary for the purposes of rendering a house more suitable for the accommodation of a person with a disability who has an enduring physical, sensory, mental health or intellectual impairment. The types of works allowable under the scheme include the provision of access ramps, downstairs toilet facilities, stairlifts, accessible showers, adaptations to facilitate wheelchair access, extensions and any other works which are reasonably necessary for the purposes of rendering a house more suitable. The maximum grant available under this scheme is €30,000.

Mobility Aids Grant Scheme

The Mobility Aids Grant Scheme is available to cover a basic suite of works that relate to mobility problems, primarily but not exclusively associated with ageing. The works include, Grab Rails, Access Ramps, Level access showers, Stair Lifts and other minor works deemed necessary. The maximum grant available under this scheme is €6,000.

Housing Aid for Older People Grant Scheme

The Housing Aid for Older People is available to assist older people living in poor housing conditions to have any necessary repairs or improvements carried out. The type of works grant aided under the scheme includes re-roofing and rewiring. The maximum grant available under this scheme is €10,500.
